Early UFO Reports INDEX

Early UFO Reports -- 1947-The Kenneth Arnold Sighting

1947-The Kenneth Arnold Sighting

Kenneth Arnold - NICAP.org

Summary:
There have been UFO sightings ever since man roamed the Earth. There exist many paintings of centuries past that depict unusual flying objects in the sky. Folklore of many early peoples are filled with stories of strange objects flying through the skies. However, most Ufologists credit pilot Kenneth Arnold's UFO sighting of 1947 as the beginning of the modern UFO age.

Early UFO Reports -- 1947-Roswell UFO Crash

Roswell Depiction - B J Booth

UFO Cornerstone:
If anyone mentions the word UFO, somewhere in the conversation Roswell will come up. Just as theHill Abduction Case is used to judge alien abduction reports, Roswell is the bread and butter of Ufology. This one case will keep Ufology going, even through its darkest days. The case is never over, there is never an end to the witness lists, and the discussion goes on and on. Roswell is the very heart of the study of UFOs. This distinction is very well earned.

Early UFO Reports -- 1948-Gorman Dogfight with UFO

Wave of UFO-Plane Encounters
UFO sightings that come in waves are always of great interest. Has a group of alien ships made a reconnaissance run on planet Earth for a brief period of time? In 1948, there were three cases of UFO contact with airplanes. In addition to the case of the Gorman dogfight addressed below, also see the Thomas Mantel Incidentand the Chiles-Whitted Encounter.

Early UFO Reports -- 1948-Death of Thomas Mantell

Pilot Lost Chasing UFO - B J Booth

Summary:
There are three exceptional UFO cases in 1948 which involved pilot-UFO encounters. One of these is the Chiles-Whitted Sighting The second one is the well-documented Gorman Dogfight with a UFOand the third is the case of Captain Thomas Mantell. The Mantell case occurred on January 7, 1948. He was a member of the Kentucky Air National Guard, and while on a routine flight, would become the first pilot to lose his life while persuing a UFO, at least that we know about.

Pilots Encounter UFO - B J Booth

Summary:
Many people in the aviation industry will tell you privately that if you knew how many airplane near-misses there were each and every day, it would certainly concern you. But what if this also was happening between UFOs and planes? There are at least two well documented cases of this very thing. One of them is the Gorman Dogfight with a UFO which occurred in 1948, and a sighting which occurred over Montgomery, Alabama, on July 24, 1948.

Early UFO Reports -- 1951-The Lubbock Lights

1951-The Lubbock Lights

Lubbock Lights - UFO Phenomenon

Summary:
The state of Texas has had more than its share of great UFO cases, four of them legendary:
The fourth is the well-documented "Lubbock Lights" case of 1951. The case began as three Texas Technological College professors, Dr. W. I. Robinson, Dr. A. G. Oberg, and W. L. Ducker were chatting in Robinson's backyard at 9:10 PM, August 25. Without a warning, the three men saw a number of lights fly across the clear, dark Texas sky.

Early UFO Reports -- 1952-Washington D. C. Buzzed by UFOs

1952-Washington D. C. Buzzed by UFOs

 Washington D C UFOs - NICAP.org

Summary:
The statement that UFOs normally only appear in desolate areas is definitely not true. Especially considering the 1952 buzzing of the White House, Capitol building, and the Pentagon. There were basically two separate waves of UFOs over our Capitol. The first occurred on July 19/20, and the second on July 26/27. The sightings were confirmed by ground and airplane radar, and visual reports from pilots sent to validate the objects. Also, photographs were taken, and one of these is included in our Best UFO Photographs Gallery

Early UFO Reports -- 1953-Pilot Felix Moncla Lost Chasing UFO

1953-Pilot Felix Moncla Lost Chasing UFO

Pilot Felix Moncla - B J Booth

Summary:
On November 23, 1953, one of the great mysteries of UFOs began, as an Air Defense Command Ground Intercept radar controller at Truax AFB in Madison, Wisconsin received a radar blip of an unknown object over Lake Michigan. An F-89-C Scorpion was immediately dispatched from Kincross Air Force Base to locate the target. 1st Lieutenant Felix Moncla, Jr. piloted the jet, with 2nd Lieutenant R. Wilson operating the radar.

Early UFO Reports -- 1957-The Levelland, Texas, UFO Landings

1957-The Levelland, Texas, UFO Landings

Levelland Texas UFO Landings - B J Booth

Summary:
On November 2, 1957, one of the best documented cases of UFO landings took place in Levelland, Texas, at the time a city of about 10,000 people. This night would be the most unforgettable experience ever for patrolman A. J. Fowler, who was manning the police call line. He received fifteen different calls from anxious citizens reporting UFOs. The sightings began at 11:00 PM, some four miles west of town. Pedro Saucedo and friend Joe Salaz were driving in a pick-up truck, and observed a brightly lit cigar-shaped object heading in their direction.

Early UFO Reports -- 1958-Trindade Island UFO Photographs

1958-Trindade Island UFO Photographs

Trinidade Island UFO Photos - Brazilian Navy

Summary:
One of the best cases of photographic proof of UFOs occurred in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, near the island of Trinidade in 1958. It had served a great purpose in World War ll, being base for United States and Brazilian warships while battling German U-boats. After the war, the island was left deserted. However, in January of 1957, an oceanographic and meteorological station was planned for the location.

Early UFO Reports --1959-The Papua, New Guinea UFOs

1959-ThePapua, New Guinea UFOs

Papua, New Guinea UFO - B J Booth

Summary:
On April 5, 1959, at the Anglican mission village at Boianai, Papua, New Guinea, one of the most well-documented cases of alien visitation began. At this time in history, this village was a territory of Australia. The Australian Anglican Church had sent Father William Booth Gill to lead the mission. He would be the main subject of a series of UFO sightings with alien beings.

Early UFO Reports - 1961-The Hills: Abducted by Aliens

1961-TheHills: Abducted by Aliens

 1961-The Hills: Abducted by Aliens - B J Booth

Abducted by Aliens:
Many early researchers into the mystery of UFOs had distinctive lines of belief. It is in the realm of possibility that someone could see and report a UFO, but it is impossible that the alien beings flying the UFO would interact with humans, and certainly not take them against their will. This line of distinction would forever disappear because of one flagship case of alien abduction, the Betty and Barney Hill encounter. Their journey into the unknown began in New Hampshire in September, 1961, and would forever change the course of Ufology.

Early UFO Reports -- 1964-UFO Landing at Socorro, New Mexico

1964-UFO Landing at Socorro, New Mexico

 UFO Landing - B J Booth

A UFO encounter with occupants in Socorro, New Mexico took place on April 24, 1964, and involved policeman Lonnie Zamora. This encounter is one of the best documented events with physical trace evidence. Some other examples of UFO trace evidence can be found in the Tulley Saucer Nest case and the Delphos, Kansas Glowing Ring case.

Early UFO Reports -- 1965-The Kecksburg, Pennsylvania UFO Crash

1965-TheKecksburg, Pennsylvania UFO Crash

 Kecksburg UFO Crash - B J Booth

A UFO crash case that is discussed almost as much as the Roswell crash occurred at Kecksburg, Pennsylvania on December 5, 1965. Eyewitness reports coupled with radar confirmed an anomalous object moving through Canada, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The object appeared as a fireball to witnesses, yet it seemed to be under intelligent control. The Pennsylvania saga began with a report from Frances Kalp, who phoned in her sighting to WHJB radio station in Greensburg at about 6:30 PM.

Early UFO Reports -- 1967-The Falcon Lake UFO Encounter

1967-The Falcon Lake UFO Encounter

Falcon Lake UFO - UFO Evidence.org

One of the best documented cases of physical trace evidence is known as the "Falcon Lake Encounter." Occurring on May 19, 1967, the lone participant was Stephen Michalak, who was a mechanic by trade, but his hobby was prospecting for silver. He was enjoying his favorite pastime when he encountered two UFOs, and actually touched one of the unknown flying objects that had landed in his vicinity.

Early UFO Reports -- Foo Fighters: UFOs of World War II

Foo Fighters: UFOs of World War II

Foo Fighters - U.S. Air Force

Only a few years before Kenneth Arnold had his historic sighting of unknown flying objects that would be coined "flying saucers" by a news reporter in 1947, another phenomena was still mystifying researchers. During the fire of WW II battles in the sky, American and German pilots were experiencing the "foo-fighters."
